Free lounge access isn't automatic any more. Learn the new 2026 spend rules, how card lounge access works and which credit cards still give good lounge benefits.

A quiet seat, free snacks and Wi-Fi before your flight: that's why credit cards with lounge access are so popular. But the rules have changed. In 2025 and 2026, most Indian banks started linking lounge visits to how much you spend. Here's how lounge access works now and which cards still give good value.

The big change: spend-based lounge access

Not long ago, simply holding the right card got you into the lounge. Now, most cards work like this:

  1. You spend a minimum amount on the card in a month or quarter.
  2. That unlocks lounge visits for the next month or quarter.
  3. At the lounge, you show your card (and sometimes a QR code or voucher from your bank's app).

Thresholds vary from a few thousand rupees a quarter on entry cards to much higher amounts on travel cards. A brand-new card may not qualify straight away, because the spend is counted from the previous period.

RuPay cards: from April 2026, RuPay Platinum cards lost free lounge access, while RuPay Select cards need at least ₹5,000 of spend in a calendar quarter to unlock visits in the next quarter.

Domestic vs international lounge access

  • Domestic: lounges at Indian airports, usually via the card network's programme or the bank's own partner.
  • International: usually through a Priority Pass membership given with premium cards, with a set number of free visits a year. Extra visits are charged in US dollars.
  • Guests: usually charged unless your card offers free guest visits.

Many other cards from SBI Card, ICICI, IDFC FIRST, Kotak, AU and others also offer a few lounge visits a year, usually with spend conditions. Several lifetime free cards cut their lounge visits in 2026, so check the latest terms.

How to check if your card gives lounge access

  1. Open your bank's app or the card's page and search for "lounge".
  2. Check the spend needed and the period it's counted over.
  3. See whether you need a QR code, voucher or Priority Pass card.
  4. Check the list of eligible lounges, as not every lounge at every airport is included.
  5. Before you travel, check that your visits for the period are unlocked.

Is lounge access worth paying for?

Paying for lounge entry at the door is expensive. If you fly a few times a year, a card with lounge access can be worth it, but only if:

  • you can meet the spend criteria naturally, without overspending, and
  • the annual fee is less than the value you'll get from lounges and other benefits.

Remember: there are no free lounge visits on a card you can't pay off. Interest charges will cancel out the value very quickly.

The bottom line

Lounge access is still a great perk, but it now rewards people who use their card regularly. Pick a card whose spend rules match your normal spending, check that your visits are unlocked before you fly, and always pay your bill in full.
